Reflections on a great Sunday

Today was a beautiful day here in Dallas, GA.  Clint and I went to church this morning and enjoyed worshipping with the “Children of the World”.  They are kids who have been helped by the organization World Help.  Brian talked a lot this morning about what West Ridge is doing to go out into the world.  He talked about the upcoming mission trips and ways that we can be involved.   After church, we hit our favorite spot…Moe’s.  Some of the kids at school think I own part of Moe’s because I eat there all the time.  I’m not sure what it is…but Moo Moo Mr. Cow just brings a smile to my face!  Then, we headed off to see the new movie…The Kingdom.  It was good!  Fast paced.  Lots of scenes that show what we are up against in the Middle East.  Also a good reminder to pray for my brother Kevin and the rest of our troops on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the rest of the Middle East.  We are fighting a war that will never be won this side of heaven.  However, I believe strongly in what they are doing and am excited that my brother is part of our effort to help the people in harm’s way.

We spent the afternoon here at home.  Lori stopped by to visit for a couple hours and then headed home to TN.  Then, some of Clint’s family stopped by for a little while.  It was a relaxing afternoon.  I worked on my lesson plans for a little while on the front porch and then I grilled hamburgers and we threw the football in the yard until it got too dark to see.

Living Passionately for Christ

After that, I came in to finish up my Bible study for small group tomorrow night.   We are finishing up week 2 of “Living Passionately for Christ” by Cas Monaco.  It is a study of the book of Philippians.  I am really enjoying it so far.

As I was studying, I had iTunes playing some songs from Taylor Grocery Band.  They are a band that my brother started listening to in college.  I really like their sound.  One of their songs really hit me tonight.  It is pretty simple theology, but there is a lot of truth to the words.

Denomination Blues

I wanna tell you people it’s a nat’ral fact
Ev’ry man don’t understand ’bout the life
And that’s all, I tell you that’s all
‘Cause you better have Jesus
I tell you that’s all

Well, the denominations have the right to fight
They ought go on and treat each other right
And that’s all, I tell you that’s all
‘Cause you better have Jesus
I tell you that’s all

It’s right to stand together, wrong to stand apart
When none will enter heaven but the pure at heart
And that’s all, I’ll tell you that’s all
‘Cause you better have Jesus
I’ll tell you that’s all

Well, the primitive Baptists they believe
That you can’t go to heaven ‘less you wash your feet
And that’s all, I’ll tell you that’s all
‘Cause you better have Jesus
I tell you that’s all

Well, the African Methodists, they believe the same
‘Cause they know demonination ain’t a thing but a name
And that’s all, I’ll tell you that’s all
‘Cause you better have Jesus
I tell you that’s all

Well, people that jump from church to church
You can bet their conversion don’t amount too much
And that’s all, I’ll tell you that’s all
‘Cause you better have Jesus
I tell you that’s all

Well, you can to your college, you can go to your school
But if you ain’t got Jesus, you’se (you are) an educated fool
And that’s all, I’ll tell you that’s all
‘Cause you better have Jesus
I tell you that’s all

REMEDY is here!

Remedy

The newest release from the David Crowder Band is here.  REMEDY is an album with some new stuff along with the familiar great sounds of DC*B.  Two words….GET IT!

The matter is really quite simple

About 150 years ago, Soren Kierkegaard wrote these words:

The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand it we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined. How would I ever get on in the world?

Herein lies the real place of Christian scholarship. Christian scholarship is the Church’s prodigious invention to defend itself against the Bible, to ensure that we can continue to be good Christians without the Bible coming too close. Dreadful it is to fall into the hands of the living God. Yes, it is even dreadful to be alone with the New Testament

Our desire at North Cobb Christian School is to equip our students to impact the world for Christ.  This year we are tackling some tough issues in our studentLIFE ministry to prepare our students to enter conversations with their friends about things that are taking place in our culture. As Christians, we are challenged in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to “take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.”

To kick off this endeavor, we are hosting a 4-week Medical Ethics series in Upper School Chapel.  We have chosen three hot button Medical issues to present to our students. We have recruited some experts to come and share the facts with us from a Christian worldview. We are going to finish out the series with a panel discussion aimed at helping our students form their own opinions so that they can influence their friends and impact the world for Christ.

We want to invite you to join us for this series. We are praying that God would challenge us to learn more about these issues that will influence how we vote and the stands that we take in our own lives.

Transformed

This year at North Cobb Christian, our theme verse is Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the ways of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve God’s will — His good, pleasing, and perfect will.”  We started off our year with a great retreat, you can read about it here.   Yesterday I had the privilege of speaking at an Eagle Scout Ceremony.  My theme was “Transformers”.  Today, we started a new sermon series at West Ridge called…you guessed it…”Transformers.”  I am starting to think that God is trying to tell me something…hmmm…I wonder what it is :)
