Book Review: Eat Mor Chikin: Inspire More People

You might have noticed that I have really had a strong Chick-fil-A theme on my blog lately (Second Mile Service and How’d You Do It Truett?).  At the start of another school year, I love to spend time reminding myself of the urgency of outstanding customer service.  This past weekend I had a chance to read, Eat Mor Chikin: Inspire More People also written by Truett Cathy the founder of Chick-fil-A.  This book gives the history of Chick-fil-A as well as the personal story of Truett Cathy.  He takes very seriously his role in leading others by serving them.

I am grateful for Truett Cathy and his intentional servant leadership.  The way this is lived out through CFA Operators and employees throughout our community is making a difference for the cause of Christ.  Here are some things that I highlighted while reading this book…

  • The lesson from the Cows is the lesson of my life: Take advantage of unexpected opportunities.
  • Nearly every moment of every day we have the opportunity to give something to someone else — our time, our love, or our resources.
  • We love it when an Operator earns a lot of money because that means we are also earning a lot of money from the restaurant.  The more successful we make the Operator, the more successful we are.  We want the Operator to take the same attitude: “The more successful I make Chick-fil-A, the more successful I make myself.”
  • We don’t hire people because they need a job.  We hire people because we need them.
  • Customers don’t like surprises.
  • Being successful requires doing more than just unlocking the doors every day.  Our philosophy of “doing the right thing and doing things right” is hardly ever the easiest solution.  It is, however, always the best solution.
