Emma: May 2013

May was a crazy busy month…the last month of school always flies by!  May started off with a bang as we all headed to Nashville to meet up with the rest of my family to welcome my brother home after 10 months in Afghanistan with the army.  We are so proud of Kevin and the work he is doing…but we were so glad to see his handsome face when he came walking off the plane.  What a treasure to have him home…our family is also very mindful of those that don’t have the opportunity to welcome their beloved soldiers home.

Emma’s class had field day near the beginning of May.  I am so glad that nothing has really changed about field day all these years since I was in elementary school.  It’s still all about having a good time and making sure there is something that everyone can be successful at.  Emma had a blast and she still talks about how much fun “Team Pile” had.  We also had a great time at the Academy Singers Showcase and the Applaud the Arts dinner.  We also hit up several graduation parties over the month of May and celebrated a lot of friends graduating from high school and college.

Clint had to head out of town for a week late in May for work.  Emma and I always try to make sure to have several things planned for when he is gone so that we can stay busy…it makes the week go by much faster!  We started out Sunday evening by going with some friends to Passion City Church to see one of my favorite seniors play drums on the main stage.  We had a great time cheering Avery on and hanging out with our friends.  On the way home, Emma was teasing that she felt sick and wouldn’t be going to school the next day.  I said, “Oh no…we can’t be sick this week since Daddy is out of town.”  Everyone laughed and then we called it a night.

Emma and I were off to a great start that Monday morning and headed off to school ready for a good day.  I had some morning meetings and then I got a call around noon to come to the clinic that Emma was in there.  Right when I walked in to the clinic, our sweet nurse Jane told me that I needed to get my purse and keys that Emma needed to go to the urgent care.  Unfortunately, my sweet girl’s finger had gotten closed in the classroom door on accident and it was cut very badly.  I rushed her to the urgent care where we were directed to take her straight to the ER at Scottish Rite to see a hand surgeon.  A dear friend joined us to go to the ER and I was grateful to have some help…that I was originally too hard headed to accept!  Several of our sweet friends offered to go with me in the first place…should have taken them up on that!  Emma’s sweet teachers even made the drive during rush hour traffic to come and check in on my girl!

The doctors and nurses at Scottish Rite were amazing with my sweet girl and she ended up having some surgery to “put her finger back together”.  My Emma was a real trooper throughout.  I know that I could never have been as brave as she was.  We prayed a lot that day and God gave us the strength to get through.  I stayed home with Emma the next day and my sweet mother-in-law came and stayed with her the next day.  Emma was dying to get back to school to see her friends.  They drew her the cutest get well cards and prayed hard for her.  I was so glad to see Emma reunited with her awesome teachers and sweet friends!

I had to take her to a hand specialist on Friday of that week to make sure all was good.  She had been in a splint and was really doing well.  The dr said things looked great and put her in a cast for two week so that she wouldn’t worry about bumping her hand.  I am writing this on June 9 and she has an appointment to get the cast off in the morning.  We are continuing to pray that all goes well and she won’t have any lasting effects from this…but we certainly don’t have to look far to see that we are extremely blessed that this is the biggest thing we have ever had to go through with our little adventurer.

Everyone was so upset to hear what happened to Emma…that they all came to visit for Memorial Day weekend!  My brother was already coming down, but Katie, JD, and Nora came and surprised Emma too!  We had a blast on the lake, eating at Henry’s, and just lounging around the house.  Katie even let Kevin and I ride in the very back of her car for a hilarious night out for dinner…what a treat!

The last week of May was spent celebrating class parties and graduation.  Emma had a great first year at NCCS and we are so excited about K4!  God blessed us with a sweet girl.  Even in the midst of having to have a cast at the beginning of summer, she has never complained and has continued to be a joy and treasure to me and Clint.  Our sweet girl is growing up and we are looking forward to a great summer!
