{"id":10941,"date":"2017-08-28T10:48:20","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T15:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=10941"},"modified":"2017-08-28T10:48:20","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T15:48:20","slug":"book-review-whisper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=10941","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: Whisper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Whisper-How-Hear-Voice-God\/dp\/073529108X\/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1503931541&amp;sr=8-5&amp;keywords=batterson\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10942\" alt=\"Whisper\" src=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Whisper-183x300.png\" width=\"183\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Whisper-183x300.png 183w, https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Whisper-626x1024.png 626w, https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Whisper.png 1317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Nothing has the potential to change your life like the whisper of God. \u00a0Nothing will determine your destiny more than your ability to hear His still small voice.<\/em>&#8221; Mark Batterson, <em>Whisper<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Whisper-How-Hear-Voice-God\/dp\/073529108X\/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1503931541&amp;sr=8-5&amp;keywords=batterson\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Whisper<\/em><\/a>\u00a0 is another great read from Mark Batterson. \u00a0He continues to amaze me with the quality of writing that he puts out on a very regular basis in addition to pastoring National Community Church and speaking at a variety of conferences and other leadership training. \u00a0I&#8217;ve reviewed several of this other books on this blog as well including:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=10286\" target=\"_blank\">Chase the Lion<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=9467\" target=\"_blank\">If<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=8612\" target=\"_blank\">The Grave Robber<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=7720\" target=\"_blank\">All In<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=6049\" target=\"_blank\">Praying Circles Around Your Children<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=4756\" target=\"_blank\">The Circle Maker<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=1316\" target=\"_blank\">Primal<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=374\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Goose Chase<\/a>, and\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=19\" target=\"_blank\">Chase the Lion<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em>I&#8217;ve long appreciated Batterson&#8217;s ability to tell a great story in order to illustrate a principle from Scripture. \u00a0He is a repository of interesting facts and stories that really draw in his audience to want to learn more about what the Lord is trying to point them to in His word.<\/p>\n<p>I am grateful for the opportunity to receive an advance copy of this book and can&#8217;t wait for it to hit shelves in October! \u00a0I highlighted several things while reading and have posted those notes below&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. 1 Samuel 13:9 p. 1<\/li>\n<li>Is God\u2019s voice the loudest voice in your life? \u00a0That\u2019s the question. \u00a0If the answer is no, that\u2019s the problem. p. 2<\/li>\n<li>After the fire came a gentle whisper. 1 Kings 19:12 p. 7<\/li>\n<li>My dictionary defines whisper as \u201cspeaking very softly using one\u2019s breath without one\u2019s vocal cords.\u201d p. 9<\/li>\n<li>When someone speaks in a whisper, you have to get very close to hear. p. 9<\/li>\n<li>Nothing has the potential to change your life like the whisper of God. \u00a0Nothing will determine your destiny more than your ability to hear His still small voice. p. 11<\/li>\n<li>When our lives get loud, with noise filling every frequency, we lose our sense of being. \u00a0We run the risk of turning into human doings rather than human beings. p. 15<\/li>\n<li>If you want to hear the heart of God, silence is the key. \u00a0If you want the Spirit of God to fill you, be still. p. 16<\/li>\n<li>Silence is the difference between sight and insight. \u00a0Silence is the difference between happiness and joy. \u00a0Silence is the difference between fear and faith. p. 18<\/li>\n<li>So is my word that goes out from my mouth. Isaiah 55:11 p. 35<\/li>\n<li>When I look through the Bible, I see whispering spots everywhere\u2026\n<ul>\n<li>For Abraham, it was the oak of Mamre<\/li>\n<li>For Isaac, it was the well outside Nahor<\/li>\n<li>For Jacob, it was Bethel<\/li>\n<li>For Moses, it was a burning bush<\/li>\n<li>For Joshua, it was Gilgal<\/li>\n<li>For Gideon, it was the oak tree in Oprah<\/li>\n<li>For Samuel, it was the tabernacle at Shiloh<\/li>\n<li>For David, it was the cave of Adullam<\/li>\n<li>For Elijah, it was Mt. Carmel<\/li>\n<li>For Mordecai, it was the kings\u2019 gate at the citadel of Susa<\/li>\n<li>For Ezekiel, it was the Kebar River<\/li>\n<li>For Daniel, it was an upstairs window facing Jerusalem<\/li>\n<li>For Jonah, it was the belly of a whale. p. 38<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Genuine listening is ultimately an act of submission. p. 41<\/li>\n<li>Change of pace + change of place = change of perspective p. 50<\/li>\n<li>God spoke to our ancestors\u2026at many times and in various ways. Hebrews 1:1 p. 53<\/li>\n<li>God will never lead us to do something that is contrary to His good, pleasing, and perfect will as revealed in Scripture. p. 60<\/li>\n<li>All Scripture is God-breathed. 2 Timothy 3:16 p. 63<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNever lose a holy curiosity.\u201d Albert Einstein p. 65<\/li>\n<li>No mater how many promises God has made, they are \u201cYes\u201d in Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:20 p. 69<\/li>\n<li>The Word of God is longer than the longest memory and stronger than the strongest imagination. \u00a0It\u2019s also deeper than the cortex of the brain. \u00a0p. 72<\/li>\n<li>Reading the Bible for breadth is\u00a0<i>lector continua.<\/i>\u00a0Reading the Bible for depth is called\u00a0<i>lector\u00a0divine.<\/i> \u00a0p. 74<\/li>\n<li>\u201cChristianity has not so much been tried and found wanting, as it has been found difficult and left untried.\u201d GK Chesterton. \u00a0You can\u2019t just read the Word, meditate on it, pray through it, and contemplate it. \u00a0You have to do it. \u00a0Until you obey it, you\u2019ve simply been educated beyond the level of your obedience. p. 75<\/li>\n<li>Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 p. 77<\/li>\n<li>Seeking God first is delighting yourself in the Lord. \u00a0Seeking God is giving Him the first word and the last word. \u00a0Seeking God first is making sure His voice is the loudest voice in your life. p. 81<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe Christian shoemaker does his duty not by putting little crosses on the shoes, but by making good shoes, because God is interested in good craftsmanship.\u201d Martin Luther, p. 84<\/li>\n<li>Diligence is doing what you do with an extra measure of excellence. \u00a0Diligence is doing what you do with an extra measure of love. p. 84<\/li>\n<li>Tears are clues that help us identify God-ordained desires. p. 86<\/li>\n<li>The Bible calls us a \u201cpeculiar people\u201d. \u00a0So why are we trying to be normal? \u00a0If uniqueness is God\u2019s gift to us, then individualization is our gift back to Him. \u00a0And it starts with hearing and heeding the voice of desire. \u00a0And when God\u2019s voice is the loudest voice in our lives, we can dare to be different. p. 93<\/li>\n<li>These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. \u00a0What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. Revelation 3:7 p. 103<\/li>\n<li>A check in the spirit is God\u2019s red light, and if you don\u2019t obey the sign, you might be headed for trouble. \u00a0God closes doors to protect us. \u00a0God closes doors to redirect us. \u00a0God closes doors to keep us from less than His best. p. 107<\/li>\n<li>Coincidence suggests shipwreck. \u00a0Providence demands divine appointment. p. 107<\/li>\n<li>And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how fain the whisper we hear of him!
