\u00a0For me, it\u2019s definitely about people and what they said or how they made me feel. \u00a0I\u00a0remember adventures with my siblings as we wreaked havoc on our neighborhood (not really\u2026but we thought we were really cool). \u00a0Bus rides to basketball games, trips with my youth group, lessons learned\u2026often the hard way, long conversations with friends, and other things dot the highlight real of my early years. \u00a0As a mom and an educator, I\u00a0realize that I have the incredible opportunity to help create and participate in those\u00a0moments for my own kids as well as my\u00a0\u201ckids\u201d at school. \u00a0This is a remarkable opportunity for stewardship. \u00a0My hope and prayer is that my words and\u00a0actions would speak life and build up others.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Power-Moments-Certain-Experiences-Extraordinary\/dp\/1501147765\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1523586737&amp;sr=8-3&amp;keywords=the+power+of+moments\">The Power of Moments<\/a><\/i> by Chip Heath and Dan Heath was an excellent read! \u00a0Their book is fully of great strategies that help us be intentional about seizing these\u00a0moments as well as educating the reader about\u00a0the psychology behind the\u00a0moment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I have shared\u00a0quotes from this book with several people and feel certain I\u2019ll reference it often. \u00a0I highlighted several things while reading and have posted those notes below&#8230;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Defining moments shape our lives, but we don\u2019t have to wait\u00a0for them happen. \u00a0We can be the authors of them. p. 5<\/li>\n<li>Our lives are measured in moments, and defining moments are the ones that endure in our memories. p. 6<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0defining moment is a short\u00a0experience that is both memorable and meaningful. p. 12<\/li>\n<li>In our research, we have found that defining moments are created from one or more of the following four elements:<\/li>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>ELEVATION: Defining moments rise above the everyday<\/li>\n<li>INSIGHT: Defining moments rewire our understanding of ourselves or the world<\/li>\n<li>PRIDE:\u00a0Defining moments capture us at our best\u2014moments of\u00a0achievement, moments of course<\/li>\n<li>CONNECTION: Defining moments are social; weddings, graduations,\u00a0baptisms, vacations, work\u00a0trips, bar and bat mitzvahs, speeches, sporting events. \u00a0These moments are strengthened because we share them with others. p. 14<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Moments matter. \u00a0And what an opportunity we miss when we leave them to chance! \u00a0Teachers can inspire,\u00a0caregivers can comfort, service workers can delight,\u00a0politicians can unite, and managers can motivate. \u00a0All t takes is a bit of insight and forethought. p. 16<\/li>\n<li>The lack of attention paid to an employee\u2019s first day is mind-boggling. \u00a0What a wasted opportunity to make a new team member feel included and appreciated. p. 18<\/li>\n<li>Logic shows why the first day fo work is an\u00a0experience worth investing in. \u00a0For new employees, it\u2019s three big transitions at once: intellectual (new work), social (new people), environmental (new place). \u00a0The first day shouldn\u2019t be a set of bureaucratic activities on a checklist. \u00a0It should be a peak moment. p. 20<\/li>\n<li>Moments of elevation are experiences that rise above the\u00a0everyday. \u00a0Times to be savored. \u00a0Moments that make us feel engaged, joyful, amazed, motivated. \u00a0They are peaks. p. 43<\/li>\n<li>A peak means\u00a0something special is happening; it should look different. p. 62<\/li>\n<li>Beware the soul-sucking force of\u00a0\u201creasonableness.\u201d\u00a0Otherwise you risk\u00a0deflating your peaks. \u00a0Speed bumps are reasonable. \u00a0Mount Everest is not reasonable. \u00a0p. 63<\/li>\n<li>Moments of insight deliver realizations and transformations. p. 95<\/li>\n<li>Tripping over the truth is an insight that packs an emotional wallop. \u00a0When you\u00a0have a sudden realization, one that you didn\u2019t see coming, and one that you know\u00a0viscerally is right, you\u2019ve tripped over the truth. \u00a0It\u2019s a defining moment that in an\u00a0instant can change the way you see the world. p. 103<\/li>\n<li>To trip\u00a0is to catch one\u2019s foot on something and stumble. \u00a0To trip over the truth is to catch one\u2019s brain on something and struggle. \u00a0What exactly is the\u00a0\u201csomething\u201d that your brain catches on? p. 105<\/li>\n<li>Imagine that you have a group of dream students. \u00a0They are engaged, they are perfectly behaved, and they have perfect memories\u2026Fill in this sentence: 3-5 years from now, my\u00a0students still know_______________________. \u00a0Or they still are able to do _____________________________. \u00a0Or they still find value in ________________________.<br \/>\nL. Dee Fink, Creating Significant Learning Experiences, p. 108<\/li>\n<li>How much of your current syllabus will advance your students towards the dreams you have for them? p. 109<\/li>\n<li>Better to take a risk, try something, and distill the answer from experience rather than from\u00a0navel-gazing. \u00a0Action leads to insight more often than insight leads to action. p. 117<\/li>\n<li>Mentors focus on improvement: Can you push a little bit further? \u00a0Can you\u00a0shoulder a little more responsibility? \u00a0They introduce a productive level of stress. p. 121<\/li>\n<li>We will never know our reach unless we stretch. p. 131<\/li>\n<li>Moments of pride capture us at our best\u2014showing courage, earning recognition, conquering challenges. p. 139<\/li>\n<li>Of all the ways we can create moments of pride for others, the simplest is to offer them recognition. p. 145<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCourage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear\u2014not absence of fear.\u201d Mark Twain p. 181<\/li>\n<li>Courage is contagious. \u00a0From historic protests to everyday acts, from the civil rights\u00a0movement to an employee asking a tough question, this is the lesson we\u2019ve learned: It is hard to be courageous, but it\u2019s easier when you\u2019ve practiced, and when you stand up, others will join you. p. 193<\/li>\n<li>Moments of connection deepen our relationships with others. \u00a0p. 203<\/li>\n<li>The presence of others turns abstract ideas into social reality. p. 213<\/li>\n<li>If you want to be part of a group that bonds like cement, take on a really demanding task that\u2019s deeply meaningful. \u00a0All of you will remember it for the rest of your lives. p. 216<\/li>\n<li>Who is the beneficiary of your work, and how are you contributing to them? p. 220<\/li>\n<li>Questions for families:<\/li>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>Tell me about your child\u2019s experiences in school. \u00a0Tell me about yours. UNDERSTANDING<\/li>\n<li>Tell me your hopes and dreams for your child\u2019s future. VALIDATION<\/li>\n<li>What do you want your child to be someday? VALIDATION<\/li>\n<li>What do I need to do to help your child learn more effectively?
