{"id":11503,"date":"2018-05-19T19:37:34","date_gmt":"2018-05-20T00:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=11503"},"modified":"2018-05-19T19:37:34","modified_gmt":"2018-05-20T00:37:34","slug":"book-review-when","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=11503","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: When"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/When-3D-e1511881329973.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-11504\" alt=\"When-3D-e1511881329973\" src=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/When-3D-e1511881329973-210x300.png\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/When-3D-e1511881329973-210x300.png 210w, https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/When-3D-e1511881329973.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been hearing a lot about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.danpink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Pink&#8217;s<\/a> new book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/When-Scientific-Secrets-Perfect-Timing\/dp\/0735210624\/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8\" target=\"_blank\">When<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and finally picked it up a few weeks ago.\u00a0 I previously read and review both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=6387\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Drive<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=6242\" target=\"_blank\">A Whole New Mind<\/a>.<\/em> \u00a0Somehow I accidentally picked up the large print version of <em>When<\/em>..and realized that the big words really help!\u00a0 I really enjoyed reading Pink&#8217;s thoughts about properly stewarding our limited mental and emotional resources for both our individual and collective well-being.\u00a0 This book proved to be a quick read full of some great takeaways.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve made some notes in my calendar to consider when planning project times for myself and brainstorming time for our team.<\/p>\n<p>I highlighted several things while reading and have posted those notes below&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When our minds are in vigilant mode, as they tend to be in the mornings, we can keep such distractions outside our cerebral gates. p. 35<\/li>\n<li>If you have even modest control over your schedule, try to nudge your most important work, which usually requires vigilance and clear thinking, into the peak and push your second-most important work, or tasks that benefit from disinhibition, into the rebound period. \u00a0Whatever you do, do not let mundane tasks creep into your peak period. p. 54<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe afternoon knows what the morning suspected.\u201d Robert Frost p. 69<\/li>\n<li>Lunch breaks offer an important recovery setting to promote occupational health and well-being\u2014particularly for employees in cognitively or emotionally demanding jobs. \u00a0For groups that require high levels of cooperation, eating together also enhances team performance. p. 95<\/li>\n<li>In many ways, naps are Zambonis for our brains. \u00a0They smooth out the nicks, scuffs, and scratches a typical day has left on our mental ice. p. 98<\/li>\n<li>A growing body of science makes it clear: Breaks are not a sign of sloth but a sign of strength. p. 104<\/li>\n<li>Each day, alongside your list of tasks to complete, meetings to attend, and deadlines to hit, make a list of the breaks you\u2019re going to take. p. 109<\/li>\n<li>If there are relatively few competitors, going first can help you take advantage of the \u201cprimacy effect,\u201d the tendency people have to remember the first thing in a series better than those that come later. p. 161<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.\u201d Orson Welles p. 213<\/li>\n<li>Endings help us encode\u2014to register, rate, and recall experiences. \u00a0But in so doing, they can distort our perceptions and obscure the bigger picture. p. 230<\/li>\n<li>Closings, conclusions, and culminations reveal something essential about the human condition: In the end, we seek meaning. p. 244<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThat is happiness;
