{"id":11861,"date":"2018-11-16T10:59:41","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T15:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=11861"},"modified":"2018-11-16T10:59:41","modified_gmt":"2018-11-16T15:59:41","slug":"book-review-the-minimalist-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=11861","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: The Minimalist Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Minimalist-Home-Room-Room-Decluttered\/dp\/1601427999\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=1542383589&amp;sr=8-3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11862 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/41FgZB3haXL._SX329_BO1204203200_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/41FgZB3haXL._SX329_BO1204203200_.jpg 331w, https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/41FgZB3haXL._SX329_BO1204203200_-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think I might have frightened my family by reading this one \ud83d\ude42 . <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Minimalist-Home-Room-Room-Decluttered\/dp\/1601427999\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=1542383589&amp;sr=8-3\"><em>The Minimalist Home<\/em><\/a> was a great read and it certainly left me with lots to think about.\u00a0 We are in the process of getting ready to spend some time away.\u00a0 As we were packing, I told my husband that we should probably get rid of all the clothes that we don&#8217;t take with us.\u00a0 He wasn&#8217;t amused \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>We downsized a few years ago and moved into a smaller home for a season as we seek God&#8217;s leading towards either building or buying another home.\u00a0 This season has been sweet as it really has given us some space to evaluate our &#8220;stuff&#8221;.\u00a0 How much stuff do we really need?<\/p>\n<p>This book was a quick read, but it certainly gave me some things to consider in this season.\u00a0 As we head into the holidays, I definitely want to make sure we are prioritizing the right things.\u00a0 I highlighted several things while reading and have posted those notes below&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimalism isn&#8217;t about removing things you love.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about removing the things that distract you from the things you love. p. 8<\/li>\n<li>A minimized home is a home that is a joy to come home to and an inspiring place to go out from.\u00a0 p. 18<\/li>\n<li>Minimizing forces questions of values, meaning, and mission in life. p. 20<\/li>\n<li>Explain in positive terms what minimalism is &#8212; the removing of unnecessary possessions so we can better live the life we want as a family. p. 23<\/li>\n<li>What it will come down to is this simple question: Do I need this? p. 28<\/li>\n<li>In psychological theory, the endowment effect is our tendency to consider an object more important than it really is simply because we own it. p. 28<\/li>\n<li>Never organize what you can discard. p. 30<\/li>\n<li>We minimize not out of guilt but because of our goals. p. 32<\/li>\n<li>Not every possession is a belonging. p. 38<\/li>\n<li>Ask yourself what is really important and then have the courage to build your home and life around that answer. p. 53<\/li>\n<li>Nobody hangs images on their wall of a hurried, busy, stress-filled life.\u00a0 Nobody displays photos of money.\u00a0 And nobody decorates their homes with pictures of another day at the office.\u00a0 Instead, on our walls, we celebrate family, friends, and faith in a better world. p. 53<\/li>\n<li>You don&#8217;t need more space.\u00a0 You need less stuff. p. 54<\/li>\n<li>It feels better to do stuff than to have stuff. p. 136<\/li>\n<li>Moving into a smaller place isn&#8217;t confining.\u00a0 It opens up so many new possibilities. p. 190<\/li>\n<li>I once heard somebody (I wish I could remember who) say, &#8220;My dream is to rent an apartment in walking distance of a train station that can take me to an airport, where I can reach anywhere in the world.&#8221; p. 202<\/li>\n<li>The goal of minimalism is not just to own less stuff.\u00a0 The goal is to unburden our lives so we can accomplish more. p. 210<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through their book review bloggers program.
