And the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem the holy city, while nine out of ten remained in the other towns.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_2\"><strong>2<\/strong> And the people blessed all the men who willingly offered to live in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"verse Neh_11_3\"><strong>3<\/strong><br \/>\nThese are the chiefs of the province who lived in Jerusalem; but in the towns of Judah everyone lived on his property in their towns: Israel, the priests, the Levites, the temple servants, and the descendants of Solomon&#8217;s servants.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_4\"><strong>4<\/strong> And in Jerusalem lived certain of the sons of Judah and of the sons of Benjamin. Of the sons of Judah: Athaiah the son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalalel, of the sons of Perez;<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_5\"><strong>5<\/strong> and Maaseiah the son of Baruch, son of Col-hozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, son of the Shilonite.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_6\"><strong>6<\/strong> All the sons of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were 468 valiant men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"verse Neh_11_7\"><strong>7<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd these are the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_8\"><strong>8<\/strong> and his brothers, men of valor, 928.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_9\"><strong>9<\/strong> Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer; and Judah the son of Hassenuah was second over the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"verse Neh_11_10\"><strong>10<\/strong><br \/>\nOf the priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, Jachin,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_11\"><strong>11<\/strong> Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, ruler of the house of God,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_12\"><strong>12<\/strong> and their brothers who did the work of the house, 822; and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_13\"><strong>13<\/strong> and his brothers, heads of fathers&#8217; houses, 242; and Amashsai, the son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_14\"><strong>14<\/strong> and their brothers, mighty men of valor, 128; their overseer was Zabdiel the son of Haggedolim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"verse Neh_11_15\"><strong>15<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of Bunni;<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_16\"><strong>16<\/strong> and Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the chiefs of the Levites, who were over the outside work of the house of God;<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_17\"><strong>17<\/strong> and Mattaniah the son of Mica, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, who was the leader of the praise, who gave thanks, and Bakbukiah, the second among his brothers; and Abda the son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_18\"><strong>18<\/strong> All the Levites in the holy city were 284.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"verse Neh_11_19\"><strong>19<\/strong><br \/>\nThe gatekeepers, Akkub, Talmon and their brothers, who kept watch at the gates, were 172.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_20\"><strong>20<\/strong> And the rest of Israel, and of the priests and the Levites, were in all the towns of Judah, every one in his inheritance.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_21\"><strong>21<\/strong> But the temple servants lived on Ophel; and Ziha and Gishpa were over the temple servants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"verse Neh_11_22\"><strong>22<\/strong><br \/>\nThe overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, of the sons of Asaph, the singers, over the work of the house of God.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_23\"><strong>23<\/strong> For there was a command from the king concerning them, and a fixed provision for the singers, as every day required.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_24\"><strong>24<\/strong> And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the sons of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king&#8217;s side in all matters concerning the people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"verse Neh_11_25\"><strong>25<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd as for the villages, with their fields, some of the people of Judah lived in Kiriath-arba and its villages, and in Dibon and its villages, and in Jekabzeel and its villages,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_26\"><strong>26<\/strong> and in Jeshua and in Moladah and Beth-pelet,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_27\"><strong>27<\/strong> in Hazar-shual, in Beersheba and its villages,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_28\"><strong>28<\/strong> in Ziklag, in Meconah and its villages,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_29\"><strong>29<\/strong> in En-rimmon, in Zorah, in Jarmuth,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_30\"><strong>30<\/strong> Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its fields, and Azekah and its villages. So they encamped from Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_31\"><strong>31<\/strong> The people of Benjamin also lived from Geba onward, at Michmash, Aija, Bethel and its villages,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_32\"><strong>32<\/strong> Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_33\"><strong>33<\/strong> Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_34\"><strong>34<\/strong> Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat,<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_35\"><strong>35<\/strong> Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen.<\/span><span class=\"verse Neh_11_36\"><strong>36<\/strong> And certain divisions of the Levites in Judah were assigned to Benjamin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Takeaways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I&#8217;m not a huge fan of committees sometimes because they tend to lead to lots of meetings, lots of discussion, and little action. \u00a0However, in this passage, I am challenged by the great care that was taken to select the team that would lead Jerusalem.<\/li>\n<li>Notice that one out of ten was sent to live in Jerusalem while the other nine stayed in the outer towns and villages. \u00a0I wonder how they reacted? \u00a0Did they lead where they were? \u00a0Did they spend time in prayer for those who had been chosen to lead?<\/li>\n<li>How much time do we spend in prayer selecting those that we place in leadership positions? \u00a0It is too easy to fall in the trap of only chosing someone because you think they will say yes. \u00a0For me, this passage is a reminder to recognize what a weighty challenge it is to select those who will lead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Text: Nehemiah 11 1 Now the leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem.
