{"id":2454,"date":"2010-10-12T11:05:23","date_gmt":"2010-10-12T15:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=2454"},"modified":"2010-10-12T11:05:23","modified_gmt":"2010-10-12T15:05:23","slug":"book-review-outlive-your-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=2454","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: Outlive Your Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Outlive-Your-Life-Were-Difference\/dp\/0849920698\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1286882557&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2455\" title=\"_225_350_Book.248.cover\" src=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/225_350_Book.248.cover_-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/225_350_Book.248.cover_-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/225_350_Book.248.cover_.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last night I had a few extra minutes to devote to reading, so I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Outlive-Your-Life-Were-Difference\/dp\/0849920698\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1286882557&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Outlive Your Life<\/em><\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maxlucado.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Max Lucado<\/a>. \u00a0I read it in one sitting because it has such a powerful message. \u00a0I have been a longtime fan of Lucado and always look forward to reading his new books. \u00a0He has an real gift for helping readers see the application of Scripture. \u00a0I read my first Lucado book when I was 11 years old. \u00a0I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Six-Hours-One-Friday-Chronicles\/dp\/1590520521\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1286894129&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Six Hours One Friday<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0Pretty heavy reading for a junior high student, but a powerful message that still resonates with me today as I contemplate the Cross.<\/p>\n<p>I received this book as a part of Thomas Nelson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/booksneeze.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Book Sneeze<\/a> Program and was eager to review it on my blog. \u00a0God always amazes me at how He can take books I am reading, conversations I am having, songs I hear, and sermons from church and weave them all into a lesson that He wants me to learn. \u00a0I guess it&#8217;s good that God knows I am pretty hard headed and He has to use every method available to teach me!<\/p>\n<p>The whole premise of this book is to live your life in a way that glorifies God and outlasts your physical time on this Earth. \u00a0The book is definitely a challenge to Christians to serve others and be the hands and feet of Christ particularly to the poor, the wounded, the downtrodden, the orphans, and the widows&#8230;just as the Bible commanded!<\/p>\n<p>Here is the prevailing questions&#8230;What are you going to do to truly make a difference is life for the glory of God and the good of others?<\/p>\n<p>Here are some things I highlighted while reading. \u00a0Please keep in mind that these are all Max&#8217;s words and not mine. \u00a0This is also only a small taste of what all this book has to offer those that really desire to go after what it means to truly live as a Christian. \u00a0Click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Outlive-Your-Life-Were-Difference\/dp\/0849920698\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1286895894&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to pick up a copy of<em> Outlive Your Life<\/em>&#8230;and while you are at it, buy one to give away too!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The problem is not in the supply; the problem is in the distribution.\u00a0 God has given this generation, our generation, everything we need to alter the course of human suffering.<\/li>\n<li>Question 1: Had you been a German Christian during World War II, would you have taken a stand against Hitler?<\/li>\n<li>Question 2: Had you lived in the South during the civil rights conflict, would you have taken a stand against racism?<\/li>\n<li>Question 3: When your grandchildren discover you lived during a day in which 1.75 billion people were poor and 1 billion were hungry, how will they judge your response?<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe are God\u2019s masterpiece.\u00a0 He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.\u201d Ephesians 2:10 NLT<\/li>\n<li>Here\u2019s a salute to long life: goodness that outlives the grave, love that outlasts the final breath.\u00a0 May you live in such a way that your death is just the beginning of your life.<\/li>\n<li>God doesn\u2019t call the qualified.\u00a0 He qualifies the called.<\/li>\n<li>God spoke to us through Isaiah: \u201cI will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.\u201d Isaiah 49:6 ESV<\/li>\n<li>With whom do you feel most fluent?<\/li>\n<li>For whom do feel most compassion?<\/li>\n<li>Governments don\u2019t feed the soul.\u00a0 The secular relief house can give a bed, a meal, and valuable counsel.\u00a0 But we can give much more.\u00a0 Not just help for this life but hope for the next.<\/li>\n<li>Our common concern gave us a common song.<\/li>\n<li>Our only hope is to work together.<\/li>\n<li>Those who suffer belong to all of us.\u00a0 And if all of us respond, there is hope.<\/li>\n<li>Something holy happens around a dinner table that will never happen in a sanctuary.\u00a0 In a church auditorium you see the backs of heads.\u00a0 Around the table you see the expressions on faces.\u00a0 In the auditorium one person speaks; around the table everyone has a voice.\u00a0 Church services are on the clock.\u00a0 Around the table there is time to talk.<\/li>\n<li>Hospitality opens the door to uncommon community.<\/li>\n<li>There is something fundamentally good about taking time to see a person.<\/li>\n<li>Works done in God\u2019s name long outlive our earthly lives.<\/li>\n<li>It all began with an honest look and a helping hand.\u00a0 Could this be God\u2019s strategy for human hurt?\u00a0 First, kind eyes meet desperate ones.\u00a0 Next, strong hands help weak ones.\u00a0 Then, the miracle of God.\u00a0 We do our small part, he does the big part, and life at the Beautiful Gate beings to be just that.<\/li>\n<li>Would you be bold tomorrow?\u00a0 Then be with Jesus today.\u00a0 Be in his Word.\u00a0 Be with his people.\u00a0 Be in his presence.\u00a0 And when persecution comes (and it will), be strong.\u00a0 Who knows?\u00a0 People may realize that you, like the disciples, have been with Christ.<\/li>\n<li>Help me see the world through your eyes by focusing on your son, remembering what he accomplished on the cross despite the persecution heaped on him.\u00a0 Whatever persecution I might suffer, Lord, let it bring you honor \u2013 and use it to help other followers of Jesus who will face their own persecution.<\/li>\n<li>Cut concern for the poor out of the Bible, and you cut the heart out of it.\u00a0 God makes the poor his priority.\u00a0 When the hungry pray, he listens.\u00a0 When orphans cry, he sees.<\/li>\n<li>Jesus had a target audience.\u00a0 The poor.\u00a0 The brokenhearted.\u00a0 Captives.\u00a0 The blind and oppressed.<\/li>\n<li>Enable me to love the invisible God by serving the very visible poor in my corner of the world.\u00a0 Help me to be creative without being condescending, encouraging without being egotistic, and fearless without being foolish.<\/li>\n<li>We can rise too high but can never stoop too low.<\/li>\n<li>The cross of Christ creates a new people, a people unhindered by skin color or family feud.\u00a0 A new citizenry, based not on common ancestry or geography but on a common Savior.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGod has shown me that he doesn\u2019t think anyone is unclean or unfit\u201d Acts 10:28 CEV<\/li>\n<li>Our passionate prayers move the heart of God.<\/li>\n<li>None of us can help everyone.\u00a0 But all of us can help someone.\u00a0 And when we help them, we serve Jesus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/BookSneeze.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>BookSneeze.com<\/em><\/a><em> book review bloggers program.
