{"id":4226,"date":"2011-10-17T10:56:51","date_gmt":"2011-10-17T15:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=4226"},"modified":"2011-10-17T10:56:51","modified_gmt":"2011-10-17T15:56:51","slug":"book-review-a-thousand-splendid-suns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=4226","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: A Thousand Splendid Suns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?attachment_id=4228\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4228\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4228\" title=\"1000suns\" src=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/1000suns-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/1000suns-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/1000suns.jpg 423w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This past summer I read <em>The Kite Runner<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khaledhosseini.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Khaled Hosseini<\/a> and posted a review <a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=3580\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 We were eating dinner with some friends last weekend and my friend mentioned <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Thousand-Splendid-Suns-Khaled-Hosseini\/dp\/159448385X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1318865834&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">A Thousand Splendid Suns<\/a><\/em>, another book by Hosseini.\u00a0 She had finished reading it and loaned me her copy.\u00a0 I could hardly put it down.\u00a0 Again, a very compelling story about what it was like to grow up in Afghanistan.\u00a0 For a Westerner reading this book, again my eyes have been opened to the tragedies that the Afghans have lived each and every day at the hands of the Taliban and prior to that&#8230;the Soviets.\u00a0 This story revolved around the lives of Miriam and Laila&#8230;separately at first, and then together for the majority of the book.\u00a0 This really is a heartwarming story in some ways because of the way that the ladies worked together for the good of their family even at the cost of their own comfort.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every Afghan story is marked by death and loss and unimaginable grief.
