What does it say?<br \/>2.  What does it mean?<br \/>3.  What does it mean for me? (practical application)<\/p>\n<p>Miracles found in these chapters (10) c.f. Isaiah 53:4<br \/>1. Jesus heals a man with leprosy (8:1-4)<br \/>2. Jesus heals the centurion\u2019s servant (8:5-13)<br \/>3. Jesus heals Peter\u2019s mother-in-law and others (8:14-17)<br \/>4. Jesus calms the storm (8:23-27)<br \/>5. Jesus drove out the demons (8:28-34)<br \/>6. Jesus heals the paralyzed man (9:1-8)<br \/>7. Jesus heals a bleeding woman (9:20-22)<br \/>8. Jesus raises Jairus\u2019 daughter from the dead (9:23-26)<br \/>9. Jesus heals the blind man (9:27-31)<br \/>10. Jesus heals the mute man (9:32-33)<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 8-10<br \/>The kingdom extended under Jesus\u2019 authority<\/p>\n<p>The Narrative (8:1-10:4)<\/p>\n<p>8:1-4 Jesus heals a man with leprosy<br \/> -Don\u2019t tell anyone<br \/> -Go to the priest to be declared clean<\/p>\n<p>8:5-13 A Roman centurion demonstrates his faith<br \/> -Romans looked down on Jews<br \/> -Centurion rewarded for his faith<\/p>\n<p>8:18-22 The cost of following Christ<br \/>  -What does it cost?<br \/>-What are you willing to pay?<br \/>-\u201cMy sin will take me further than I want to go, keep me longer<br \/>than I want to stay, and cost me more than I want to pay.\u201d<br \/>  -Discipleship is an investment<\/p>\n<p>8:23-27 Jesus calms the storm<br \/>  -storms of nature<br \/>  -storms of the troubled heart<\/p>\n<p>9:1-8  Jesus heals a paralyzed man<br \/>  -spiritual sickness more pressing than physical sickness<br \/>-Blaspheme: claiming to be God and applying his characteristics to yourself<\/p>\n<p>9:9-13  The calling of Matthew<br \/>  -Matthew was a tax collector<br \/>-his gift of organization and record-keeping was used to journal the ministry of Christ<br \/>-leaving his job as a tax collector left him unemployed, he had no backup plan<br \/>-2 changes for Matthew 1. New life 2. New purpose<br \/>-Jesus\u2019 insistence on eating with public sinners<\/p>\n<p>9:14-17 New wineskins<br \/>-Jesus didn\u2019t come to patch up the old religious system of Judaism<br \/>-New message: Jesus came to earth to offer all people forgiveness and reconciliation with God<br \/>-dawning kingdom, manifest in the presence of Jesus, is a reason to rejoice<\/p>\n<p>9:18-34 Healing<br \/>  -bleeding woman \u201cuntouchables\u201d<br \/>  -Jairus\u2019 daughter \u201cmaking the impossible possible\u201d<br \/>-Jesus told them to keep quiet about the healing because he didn\u2019t want to just be labled a \u201cmiracle worker\u201d.  He was focused on spiritual healing as a person\u2019s #1 need.<\/p>\n<p>9:35-38 Pray for workers<br \/>-v 37-38 \u201cThe harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>10:1-4  Commissioning the Twelve<br \/>  -gave them authority<br \/>-Disciples: Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James, Thaddeus, Simon, and Judas<br \/>-disciples were from all walks of life-fishermen, political activists, tax collectors, rich and poor, educated and uneducated<br \/>-God uses ordinary people to do his extraordinary work<\/p>\n<p>The Second Discourse on Mission and Martyrdom (10:5-11:1)<\/p>\n<p>10:5\u201416 Immediate project<br \/>  -go to the lost<br \/>  -live among them<br \/>  -sheep among wolves<\/p>\n<p>10:17-25 Prepare for Persecution<br \/>  -Warnings of future sufferings<br \/>  -Who will oppose us?<br \/>   * Government (18-19)<br \/>   * Religious People (17)<br \/>   * Family (21)<\/p>\n<p>10:26-31 Fear in light of the Father\u2019s providence<br \/>-v. 32-33 \u201cWhoever acknowledges me before me, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.
