Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, <em>Love and Respect in the Family<\/em><\/p>\n<p>About three years ago, I read <em>Love and Respect<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/loveandrespect.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Emerson Eggerichs<\/a> and reviewed it <a href=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=2272\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0That book really helped shape my thinking on the roles of the husband and the wife in a marriage. \u00a0I was excited to see that Dr. Eggerichs has also written a book for families,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Love-Respect-Family-Parents-Children\/dp\/0849948207\/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1385929099&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Love and Respect in the Family<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em>I received a copy of this book to review on my blog. \u00a0<em>Love and Respect in the Family<\/em> is full of encouragement for parents that desire to honor the Lord in their families. \u00a0The main reason this book was such a blessing to me is that it is chock full of Scripture that continually points the reader to Jesus. \u00a0I would recommend this book to parents of kids of any age as the truths within are timeless and applicable to many different stages of life.<\/p>\n<p>As the mom of a 5 year old daughter that I love just after Jesus and my husband&#8230;I desire to point my daughter to Jesus every single day in the way that I parent her. \u00a0This book has given me a renewed commitment to this endeavor. \u00a0My husband and I are reminded every day that God has blessed us with our daughter and we just get one chance to do this right. \u00a0I&#8217;ve highlighted several things in Love and Respect in the Family that I know I will regularly refer to in this great adventure of parenting.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kids need love. \u00a0Parents need respect.<\/li>\n<li>The good news is that when children feel loved, they are motivated to respond positively to parents, and when parents feel respected, they are energized to be lovingly affectionate with their kids. \u00a0When these needs are met, good things happen in the family.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHonor your father and your mother.\u201d \u00a0Exodus 20:12<\/li>\n<li>Titus 2:4<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 22:15<\/li>\n<li>We all need to pray that simple prayer: \u201cLord, help me respond, not react.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Romans 2:21<\/li>\n<li>1 Samuel 17:33<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 15:13<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 18:14<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFathers, do not exasperate your children.\u201d \u00a0Colossians 3:21<\/li>\n<li>Matthew 18:10-11<\/li>\n<li>Ephesians 5:10<\/li>\n<li>The first step in decoding is to discern what is happening at two levels:<br \/>\n1. \u00a0What is going on in my child\u2019s heart?<br \/>\n2. \u00a0What is going on in my heart, really?<\/li>\n<li>2 Timothy 3:2<\/li>\n<li>Psalm 25:7<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 14:29<\/li>\n<li>God wired children to need love.<\/li>\n<li>God wired parents to need respect.<\/li>\n<li>Ephesians 2:3<\/li>\n<li>\u201cStarting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 17:14<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 19:11<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHatred stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions.\u201d Proverbs 10:12<\/li>\n<li>\u201cA hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 15:18<\/li>\n<li>1 Corinthians 14:20<\/li>\n<li>\u201cKeeping away from strife is an honor for a man, but any fool will quarrel.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 20:3<\/li>\n<li>Deuteronomy 1:39<\/li>\n<li>Isaiah 66:13<\/li>\n<li>An apology is heart surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Psalm 25:7<\/li>\n<li>Luke 15:32<\/li>\n<li>A parent\u2019s love motivates a child\u2019s respect and a child\u2019s respect motivates a parent\u2019s love.<\/li>\n<li>Give, so that a child\u2019s basic needs can be met.<br \/>\nUnderstand, so that a child is not provoked or exasperated.<br \/>\nInstruct, so that your child can know and apply God\u2019s wisdom.<br \/>\nDiscipline, so that your child can correct poor choices.<br \/>\nEncourage, so that your child can develop God-given gifts.<br \/>\nSupplicate in prayer, so that your child can experience God\u2019s touch and truth.<\/li>\n<li>2 Corinthians 12:14<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBut if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.\u201d \u00a01 Timothy 5:8<\/li>\n<li>\u201cA generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.\u201d Proverbs 11:25<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEvery good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.\u201d James 1:17<\/li>\n<li>\u201cLook at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. \u00a0Are you not much more valuable than they?\u201d \u00a0Matthew 6:26<\/li>\n<li>\u201cA bribe corrupts the heart.\u201d \u00a0Ecclesiastes 7:7<\/li>\n<li>Philippians 4:19<\/li>\n<li>\u201cKeep these instructions without partiality, and do nothing out of favoritism.\u201d \u00a01 Timothy 5:21<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHonor the Lord from your wealth and from the first of all your produce.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 3:9<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBe understanding. \u00a0Love one another like members of the same family.\u201d 1 Peter 3:8<\/li>\n<li>True maturity seeks to serve the other person, not vice versa.<\/li>\n<li>How do I understand my children so they feel loved and are also motivated to act respectfully toward me?<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBroken promises are worse than rain clouds that don\u2019t bring rain.\u201d Proverbs 25:14<\/li>\n<li>James 3:6<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTake note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak.\u201d \u00a0James 1:19<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAnswering before listening is both stupid and rude.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 18:13<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHe who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 17:27<\/li>\n<li>Do I unconsciously make my children responsible for my emotional well-being and happiness?<\/li>\n<li>Matthew 11:17<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBeware of the barrenness of a busy life.\u201d \u00a0Socrates<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFor we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are\u2014yet he did not sin.\u201d \u00a0Hebrews 4:15<\/li>\n<li>Deuteronomy 6:7<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBring them up in the instruction of the Lord.\u201d \u00a0Ephesians 6:4<\/li>\n<li>\u201cListen, my son, to your father\u2019s instruction and do not forsake your mother\u2019s teaching.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 1:8<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFrom childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. \u00a0All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.\u201d \u00a02 Timothy 3:15-16<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSo faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.\u201d \u00a0Romans 10:17<\/li>\n<li>\u201cInstruct your children in the sacred writings to give them wisdom \u2018that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.\u2019\u201d 2 Timothy 3:15<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 1:2-3<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 14:12<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 15:2<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 3:1<\/li>\n<li>Pray without ceasing as you go about fulfilling God\u2019s call to bring your children up in the instruction of the Lord.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWise discipline imparts wisdom.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 29:15<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 19:18<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFor they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them.\u201d \u00a0Hebrews 12:10<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis is the way, walk in it.\u201d Isaiah 30:21<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAll discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful.\u201d Hebrews 12:11<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThose whom the Lord loves he disciplines.\u201d Hebrews 12:6<\/li>\n<li>We discipline because we care.<\/li>\n<li>Hebrews 12:9<\/li>\n<li>Create rules that are clear and fair.<br \/>\nConfront and correct without anger.<br \/>\nEnact consequences when necessary.<br \/>\nReward obedience and reaffirm love no matter what.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTreat others the same way you want them to treat you.\u201d Luke 6:31<\/li>\n<li>\u201cA refusal to correct is a refusal to love; love your children by disciplining them.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 13:24<\/li>\n<li>\u201cA fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 12:16<\/li>\n<li>\u201cA person\u2019s wisdom yields patience; it is to one\u2019s glory to overlook an offense.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 19:11<\/li>\n<li>1 Samuel 3:13<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBe angry and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger.\u201d Ephesians 4:26<\/li>\n<li>Colossians 3:25<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 1:31<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 23:13<\/li>\n<li>1 Corinthians 4:14<\/li>\n<li>Enacting discipline is a parent\u2019s toughest job. \u00a0For this reason we must commit ourselves to this parenting axiom: I will follow through on these consequences because I love my children too much to let them consciously and willfully disobey what they know is the right thing to do.<\/li>\n<li>Encouragement is foundational for children to succeed as God intends in this world. \u00a0The Lord has designed all kids to need encouragement.<\/li>\n<li>Luke 15:31-32<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHe who guards his mouth and his tongue, guards his soul from troubles.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 21:23 p.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.\u201d Proverbs 16:24 p<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 25:11<\/li>\n<li>1 Chronicles 28:20<\/li>\n<li>Encourage them as life happens.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage who they are and what they do.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage who and what they can become.<\/li>\n<li>Ecclesiastes 1:9<\/li>\n<li>Proverbs 12:25<\/li>\n<li>Look for instances when you \u201ccatch them doing something right\u201d and tell them so.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt is by his deeds that a lad distinguishes himself if his conduct is pure and right.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 20:11<\/li>\n<li>Matthew 20:20-21<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFor a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 24:16<\/li>\n<li>2 Samuel 12:16<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFrom childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation.\u201d 2 Timothy 3:15<\/li>\n<li>1 Chronicles 29:19<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNow, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.\u201d 1 John 2:28<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.\u201d 1 John 4:4<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.\u201d \u00a0Matthew 18:6<\/li>\n<li>Ezra 8:21<\/li>\n<li>Isaiah 38:19<\/li>\n<li>When a parent has authentic faith and is enjoying the Lord, it\u2019s contagious!<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBut if any of you lack wisdom, you should pray to God, who will give it to you; because God gives generously and graciously to all. \u00a0But when you pray, you must believe and not doubt at all.\u201d \u00a0James 1:5<\/li>\n<li>Lamentations 2:19<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTwo are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.\u201d \u00a0Ecclesiastes 4:9<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIron sharpens iron, so one sharpens another.\u201d \u00a0Proverbs 27:17<\/li>\n<li>John 17:21<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.\u201d \u00a0Mark 3:25<\/li>\n<li>Malachi 2:14<\/li>\n<li>We do our marriage (and our parenting) as unto Christ<\/li>\n<li>The right order is God first, then our marriage, then our kids. \u00a0When we have this straight, good thing sharpen in the hearts of our children.<\/li>\n<li>1 Corinthians 7:33<\/li>\n<li>1 Peter 3:7<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAs ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.\u201d \u00a0Matthew 25:40<\/li>\n<li>Romans 12:2<\/li>\n<li>Revelation 22:12<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThat from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. \u00a0It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.\u201d \u00a0Colossians 3:24<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWell done, good and faithful servant! \u00a0You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. \u00a0Come and share your master\u2019s happiness!\u201d Matthew 25:23<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWithout the help of the Lord it is useless to build a home.\u201d \u00a0Psalm 127:1<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAs for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.\u201d \u00a0Joshua 24:15<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHear, O Lord, and be gracious to me;
