{"id":9768,"date":"2016-02-07T19:36:16","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T00:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=9768"},"modified":"2016-02-07T19:36:16","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T00:36:16","slug":"book-review-under-our-skin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/?p=9768","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: Under Our Skin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Under-Our-Skin-Race---Frustrations-ebook\/dp\/1496413296\/ref=sr_1_1_twi_har_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1454886274&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=under+our+skin\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9769\" alt=\"carte_03-240x357\" src=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/carte_03-240x357.png\" width=\"240\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/carte_03-240x357.png 240w, https:\/\/meganstrange.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/carte_03-240x357-201x300.png 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<i>Only through a relationship\u00a0with Jesus Christ will the earthly distinctions between us fade, as our oneness in him takes precedence over color,\u00a0creed, and culture and as our allegiance to him\u00a0couples us to make those who matter to him matter most to us. \u00a0This is our hope.<\/i>&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Under-Our-Skin-Race---Frustrations-ebook\/dp\/1496413296\/ref=sr_1_1_twi_har_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1454886274&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=under+our+skin\"><i>Under Our Skin<\/i><\/a>\u00a0by Benjamin Watson<\/p>\n<p>I am extremely impressed with Benjamin Watson. \u00a0I honestly didn&#8217;t know anything at all about him until I read\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/11\/28\/us\/benjamin-watson-viral-ferguson-post\/\">his essay<\/a>\u00a0after the Ferguson decision was announced on November 25, 2014. \u00a0Watson challenged me to think more deeply about the issues regarding Ferguson and to examine my own heart to make sure that I was addressing any thoughts or attitudes that would be contrary to the gospel commandment to love my neighbor as myself (Matthew 22:39).<\/p>\n<p>Watson is a great football player who puts his faith and his family first. \u00a0It is obvious to see that he is respected by others in the NFL as well as those who have no connection at all to football at any level. \u00a0My prayer for Ben is that the Lord would continue to give him these opportunities to share and that he would keep his focus on the gospel.<\/p>\n<p>I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and am so grateful for that experience as I had friends of a variety of different backgrounds. \u00a0The public high school that I went to was full of kids from all over the world. \u00a0I became a Christian in the summer before my junior year of high school and realized that the biggest impact I could have for the gospel was the way that I interacted with my classmates. \u00a0It was such a blessing to have had that opportunity to learn so much about other people. \u00a0Since then, I&#8217;ve had the privilege to travel the world for a variety of reasons including mission trips, conferences, and most importantly&#8230;to meet and adopt our precious son Eli. \u00a0I grew up as a white girl in Memphis, TN and now I live in Atlanta, GA as a wife and as the proud mom of a white girl and a brown son. \u00a0My husband and I are so grateful that God chose to bless us with a son that helps us keep our focus on the gospel recognizing that we are all part of God&#8217;s design as the human race. Grace upon grace upon grace.<\/p>\n<p>This book doesn&#8217;t take long to read, but it will challenge you if you are willing to be honest with yourself and truly consider your thoughts on skin as well as sin. \u00a0He does an excellent job of sharing his own story while imploring the reader to recognize that everyone has a story&#8230;and one that is worth knowing and appreciating.<\/p>\n<p>I highlighted several things while reading and have posted them below&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There\u2019s a feeling in white America that everything is equal now. \u00a0But black people know in their bones that there\u2019s still a residue of neoslavery that sticks to so much of life.<\/li>\n<li>The church, I believe, has the greatest opportunity to effect change in our communities. \u00a0Yet it remains the most segregated institution in America. \u00a0\u201cSunday morning remains one of the most segregated hours in American life, with more than 8 in 10 congregations made up of one predominant racial group.\u201d Christianity Today, January 2015<\/li>\n<li>The real problem of racism is not in the extremes at the edge of society. \u00a0The problem of racism is not in \u201cthat guy over there\u201d. \u00a0It\u2019s right here.<\/li>\n<li>Most research confirms what we\u2019ve already figured out on our own: We pick up our attitudes, assumptions, and prejudices from the world around us.<\/li>\n<li>Race is a neutral part of how we understand the world as children. \u00a0But as we get older we being to learn from those around us\u2014our parents, our friends, our friends\u2019 parents\u2014and we pick up their attitudes about race. \u00a0Brown and peach become black and white.<\/li>\n<li>We tend to take things and automatically blame them on race\u2026when sometimes the facts actually say something else.<\/li>\n<li>We want to point our fingers outward, but the problem of race starts within.<\/li>\n<li>They fought violence with nonviolence. \u00a0They fought hate speech with prayer. \u00a0They fought indignity by rising up in all the glory of their God-given humanity.<\/li>\n<li>When TV news is chock-full of newscasters forming theories and assumptions, most which later prove to be untrue, they contribute to the problem.<\/li>\n<li>Truth is often more complex that we want it to be.<\/li>\n<li>I wonder why we can\u2019t turn off the TV when the speculators and sparring matches come on; and why we can\u2019t keep from going to our respective corners; and why we can\u2019t have the courage to stay away from groupthink.<\/li>\n<li>The great struggle for black and whites is to accept each other on the basis of our common humanity, a humanity that comes, as I believe, from God.<\/li>\n<li>I think something is tremendously right when blacks and whites march together, joining hands to overthrow an abusive and offensive political system.<\/li>\n<li>Can\u2019t we see in the deaths of those who have been killed\u2014white and black\u2014the tragedy of a lost life? \u00a0Can\u2019t we reach out to one another and grieve together? \u00a0Can\u2019t we find at least that one place in common, that place of love and loss, where we can be human together?<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I set out to prove a black man could receive a fair trial in the South, that we are all equal in the eyes of the law. That&#8217;s not the truth &#8217;cause the eyes of the law are humanized, yours and mine, and until we can see each other as equals, justice is never going to be even-handed. It will remain nothing more than a reflection of our own prejudices. So until that day, we have a duty under God to seek the truth &#8211; not with our eyes, and not with our minds where fear and hate turn commonality into prejudice, but with our hearts &#8211; but we don&#8217;t know better.\u201d Jake Brigand in\u00a0<i>A Time to Kill<\/i>\u00a0by John Grisham<\/li>\n<li>Black lives matter. \u00a0Our children\u2019s lives matter. \u00a0All lives matter. \u00a0And that\u2019s what being pro-life really means.<\/li>\n<li>If we are truly pro-life, shouldn\u2019t we be the first to\u00a0express both grief and grace?<\/li>\n<li>The tragedy of the racial divide is that it simply isn\u2019t personal enough. \u00a0For so many, it\u2019s just an argument, a philosophy, a political position. \u00a0A debate on TV. \u00a0But these people are not really human lives to us. \u00a0Those lives\u00a0remain distant from us. \u00a0And they are lives of a different color. \u00a0Now imagine it\u2019s your own child.<\/li>\n<li>If you see me, talk to me, or talk about me based on just one of the many stories that make up who I am, you reduce me to a\u00a0single story.<\/li>\n<li>We live in an\u00a0America that wants to\u00a0believe in a dream that doesn\u2019t exist\u2026In our search for hope, we tend to reach for what is too easy, sentimental, false, and cheap.<\/li>\n<li>There is no task in heaven or on earth more difficult than changing the human heart\u2026It\u00a0requires a supernatural\u00a0solution.<\/li>\n<li>When we focus on another person\u2019s skin, we miss the reality of our own sin.<\/li>\n<li>God gives race a new meaning. \u00a0It\u2019s called the human race.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s only by the power of God that our hearts can be transformed from the inside out. \u00a0It is only by the power of God that changed hearts will produce changed behavior and a changed society.<\/li>\n<li>Only through a relationship\u00a0with Jesus Christ will the earthly distinctions between us fade, as our oneness in him takes precedence over color,\u00a0creed, and culture and as our allegiance to him\u00a0couples us to make those who matter to him matter most to us. \u00a0This is our hope.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBe strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.\u201d Psalm 31:24<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through their book review bloggers program.
