Book Review: A Million Miles in a Thousand Years

As a part of the Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers, I had the privilege of receiving an advanced copy of Donald Miller’s newest book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.  I have read two of his other books, Blue Like Jazz and To Own a Dragon.  I enjoyed A Million Miles in a Thousand Years because of the way it reminded me to live my life with great care to not miss anything.  The book is a quick read and keeps the reader engaged with a variety of funny, somber, and crazy stories that are easy to identify with.

Anyone that has ever been to a funeral will be able to identify with Miller’s desire to live a life that matters and to be able to demonstrate accomplishment of some grand adventures.  One of my favorite parts of the book talk about a parade he heard about through a neighborhood.  One of the main rules of the parade is the fact that “no one is allowed to watch the parade, you are only allowed to participate.”

I had this book sitting on my desk for a week or two and then ended up with a few hours of unexpected free time.  I sat down and read the book in one sitting with no trouble at all.  Miller’s writing is like having a conversation at Starbuck’s with an old friend.  If you are ready to live a life that matters and encourage others around you to do the same, then this book is for you!

  1. I dont know what kind of creative comment you are looking for but here’s one for you. I would love the read the book and since I have spent a fortune buying books for seminary from all different kinds of publishing house I would love to read and enjoy this one for free. Plus when I am done I will give it away for someone else to read.

  2. Hey Megan,
I’m sure you’re looking for comments from one of the high school students, and I’m not looking to get the book. Just wanted to say “hey” from a fellow blogger! I love the pictures of your daughter.. I saw you with her at the football game, and she is SUCH a cutie! Thanks for all you do for NCCS.. and congrats on nearing the end of seminary. Bet YOU feel like you’ve gone a million miles in much less than a thousand years!

  3. Once upon a time there was a lady named Megan,
who was anything but a prideful pagan.
She was so humble in fact,
she led the “I’m Third” movement to make an impact.
And then she stumbled across a man named donald miller.
Whose books proved to be quite the thriller[s].
    Her “I’m Third” attitude sought
others to have the book she bought.
She posted a status on Facebook asking
people to do some creative commenting.
So this is a response to your plea,
c’mon, you know you want to choose me.

  4. thanks for your entries! i had to pick tara…a poem definitely wins the creativity award for this one. david, i feel your pain with laying out the dollars for seminary. i can’t believe you are almost finished! i’m very proud of you and the way that you and your family are serving the Lord.
