Do you know what a Jibbitz is?  I bet you have seen one and not even realized that is what it is called.  I almost feel like Dr. Seuss even talking about Jibbitz and Crocs, but the story is actually quite interesting.  There is definitely a niche for marketing products that piggyback off of the success of other products.  I recently read Piggybacking to Success which tells the story of a lady that invented a product that works well with the super popular Crocs shoes.  Check the notes I’ve posted below to find out some key things to keep in mind if you are marketing your product based on the success of another product…

  • You can have too much of a good thing.
  • Think big.
  • Don’t neglect your infrastructure.
  • Think targeted marketing.
  • Take the long view.
  • Have you bought any popular products lately that seemed to cry out for an accessory or service that isn’t available? Is this something that you could design, make, and sell?
