Freedom Church: We Believe

Today was the 5th and final week of the We Believe series that we have been doing over Christmas at Freedom Church.  This has been a great series, but today was my favorite week because we talked about Communion and the implications that communion has for us as we begin a new year.

Here are some of my notes from Pastor JR’s message today:

Do we truly understand all of the traditions that we celebrate?  Do we agree with all of the traditions we observe or do we just do them out of habit?

I Corinthians 11:23b-26
23 The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

I Corinthians 10:16
16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

Communion encourages us to…

1.  To look within

I Corinthians 11:28-29
28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.

2.  To look back

Luke 22:19
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

What were the “God moments” I recognized in 2009?  How am I different now than I was at this time last year?

3.  To look ahead

I Corinthians 11:26
26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

What does God have in store for you in 2010?  What are you expecting Him to do?

We closed out the We Believe series and kicked of 2010 by taking communion together as a church.  Freedom Church exists so that people far from God can experience life in Christ.  Greater things are yet to come, greater things are still to be done in this city!

Come join us at Freedom Church at 9:45 and 11:15am next Sunday morning as we kick off a three week series called “Come Home.”  Invite someone to come with you!
