Book Review: Girl, Wash Your Face

Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis has been popping up all over my Instagram and Twitter feeds lately, so I decided I better give it a read.  I’m glad I did!  This book was an easy read…like a conversation over coffee with a friend.  There were some things in the book that were a little outside of who I am…and some perhaps a lot outside.  However, I can definitely agree that the book is encouraging and addresses some things that women can tend to really beat themselves up about.  Rachel is a wife, mom of 4 kids, and runs a large media company.  Her book is pretty transparent in a very endearing way.  She is sharing her story with the goal of being encouraging to the reader.

I highlighted a few things while reading and have posted those notes below…

  • Your life is supposed to be a journey from one unique place to another; it’s not supposed to be a merry-go-round that brings you back to the same spot over and over again.  Location: 295
  • Holding each other accountable comes from a beautiful place in the heart of friendship that makes you sit down with your friend and ask with love if they’ve looked at their own actions in a particular light. Holding each other accountable comes from a place of love. Judgment comes from a place of fear, disdain, or even hate. So be careful about dressing your judgments up as accountability to make your conscience feel better. Location: 875
  • The Bible says, let that which is in the darkness be brought into the light. When things are allowed to sit in the darkness, when we’re afraid to speak them aloud, we give them power. The darkness lets those fears fester and grow until they become stronger over time. If you never allow your fears out, then how in the world can you disseminate them? Location: 1,169
  • Give yourself the permission to do the best you can and the grace to be peaceful on the days when you miss the mark. Location: 1,647
  • You have to choose not to compare. Location: 1,685
